other contemporary sources; however, the DNB disagrees with that
allegation claiming that the ‘style is rather that of some humble and incompetent
imitator of Defoe, whose story is very probably based on fact’. The plates
depict the natives and vegetation of St John, and the map gives a general picture of the Cape Verde
