Caribbean area. “Wadström’s most famous work, a two-part abolitionist classic, which contained several elegantly engraved plates and fold-out maps, including the now often reprinted cross-section of a typical slave ship. In this, Wadström not only exposed the cruelties of slavery, but he also appealed to Western economical rationalism by arguing that the slave trade had impeded the benefits of colonisation: the Africans were worth much more as trading partners and wage labourers than as slaves. The “Essay” made Wadström one of the leading voices of abolitionism in Britain and won much recognition around Europe.” Exceptionally scarce.

WADSTROM, Carl Bernhard – [Swedish-born British abolitionist (1746-1799); a follower of the Swedish mystic and seer Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) who held the belief that the “African race” was “in greater enlightenment than others on this earth, since they are such that they think more interiorly, and so receive truths and acknowledge them”; sent 1787 by the Swedish King Gustaf III who subsidised a venture to establish a West African colony, which would blend investment with philanthropy by trading with the Africans, as the head of an expedition to Guinea to find a suitable location. In the colonies he visited, he saw evidence of the brutality of the slave trade, and after he relocated to England the following year he made contact with British abolitionists, publishing his “Observations . . .” ; web page.]

An account of Sharpe’s freebooting cruise in the Pacific including the attempted sack of New Panama in 1680. By a British naval surgeon who abandoned the trading party with whom he had sailed for the WI in 1679, joining up with the celebrated buccaneers Lynch and Cook; in their company he crossed the Isthmus where he remained in order to recover from an injury, staying with the Darien Indians; when he reached the coast again, he joined William Dampier’s party. The map is the same as that which appeared in Dampier’s “A New Voyage . . .;” and the folding plates depict scenes from among the Amerindians including a view of the Council ‘smoaking tobacco after their way’. Appended to the 2nd edition is an account by Nathaniel Davis of an expedition of Englishmen to the gold mines of Spanish America in 1702. The work is so complementary to that of Dampier that it was subsumed into the 3rd edition of his narrative.
