[FOX, William] - An Address to the People of Great Britain, on the Consumption of West India Produce. (London: Printed for James Phillips and sold by Martha Gurney) 12 pages 12mo pamph, [1791] 1st ed; (ibidem) 12 pages pamph, [1791] 2nd ed. Colonial administration. Slavery. Slave trade. Caribbean area. An abolitionist tract. The first boycott of WI produce. Urges abstaining from the use of sugar and rum until the WI planters had themselves prohibited the importation of slaves and had adopted effective measures of amelioration or until such produce could be obtained from regions where it was cultivated by free labour. This, his most famous work, solidified the abolitionist forces in Great Britain and America by focusing their energies on a boycott of West Indian produce, a boycott that served not only as a viable economic solution to ending the slave trade but also provided through the power of ‘consumerism’ a kind of universal suffrage for its advocates, resulting in a political campaign that bypassed Parliament and granted power directly to the people, many of whom were of the lower and middle classes. In less than a year, it became the most widely circulated pamphlet of the eighteenth century with more than 200,000 copies distributed in Great Britain and America. There are approximately 35 editions of this work, 70,000 copies of which were said to have been printed in the first 4 months, and most are known in one or two copies. For a reply see: "Strictures on an Address . . .;" and “To the People of Great Britain . . . “ The title of the 1st and 2nd editions. The only identification of William Fox as the author of the “Address” occurs in a footnote in an anonymous pamphlet, “A Vindication of the Use of Sugar, and Other Products of the West-India Islands, in Answer to a Pamphlet entitled Remarkable Extracts, &c,” in which the writer, speaking of the “Address”, informs his readers that ‘the Author of the pamphlet in question is well known to be a Mr. F**, formerly an eminent Bookseller in Holborn.’ Until now, this reference to Fox has escaped historians, resulting in a long history in which librarians and bibliographers have consistently confused the pamphlets of William Fox the bookseller with the works of three other individuals of the same name who published between 1796 and 1821. All editions rare. GL, LOC, Rag, Sab 102813.
