Different from the similarly themed “General History of the Lives . . .;” probably a first edition in its own right; published 10 years after Defoe’s death it is not recorded as a posthumous publication of one of his works; perhaps by someone else who took on the Charles Johnson pseudonym; offers biographical information about several criminals, murderers, and pirates, in England and abroad, including the Americas. George Roberts. Barbados. Caribbean area. His comments on Barbados are of little value, relating largely to his difficulties in acquiring a ship, and the nature of its cargo. Lowndes suggests and Ha.S confirms the author to be Defoe; now generally considered to be a fictional work of Defoe assembled from newspapers and other contemporary sources; however, the DNB disagrees, claiming that the ‘style is rather that of some humble and incompetent imitator of Defoe, whose story is very probably based on fact’. The plates depict the natives and vegetation of St John, and the map gives a general picture of the Cape Verde islands. 1st edition very scarce. Cu.W, Han, Ha.S, LOC, Sab 71888.
